Traditional hand caulking and splining

JWS Marine  services are proud to work on old classic boats of all types and sizes. The work can vary from removal of old caulking and cleaning all the seems to the re-caulk. The first set of pictures below show 24ft sailing boat we had to do this very work in picture 1. This boat was re-launched  three years after having been re-caulked by the owner, and subsequently it had sunk because they had cleaned the seams too deep and managed to remove the angles of the planks (making them virtully square) with the seams in place are 10mm wide. After consulting with the owner of the boat the decision was made, that we would rout out all the seams, splines the seams with large clean planks of wood thenre-router the seams two times to put the angles back on the splines, this is shown is pictures 2 and 3. JWS Marine servcies have the experts to over come problems that may arise from old wooden boats, this project was carried out throughout 2009-2010.

New planking and traditional clenching

JWS Marine services undertake any work from rotten planks to insurance work caused by impact damage and lots more, JWS marine services will come out, take a look at the boat, so we can assess whether any fixtures or fittings insode the boat will need to be removed to gain access to the plank ends or fastenings etc.. As you can see form the picture below the engine had to come out and the engine beds along with the batteries and as we were removeing the planks the rot had spread to plank under the disel tank which ment theybhad to come out too, it just shows how a originally small job involving the removal of 2 planks can change quickly into a large project of removing in the end 5 planks, two oak frames and one oak floor.

Traditional Varnishing and Spray varnish

A quality paint or varnish finsih on your wooden boat will not only look good and add value but provides essential protection against the elements. Achievig a profrssional finish with paint and varnish is tricky and time consuming.

At JWS Marine Services we have the expertise, product knowledge and equipment to spray or re-paint your hull and/or superstructure and strip and varnish masts, booms and bowsprits; we can even replace them if required. Whatever the job we have a soloution to achieve the finish you require and keep your boat looking as good as new.

Hand painting topsides and superstructures Traditional hand painting is one of the hardest things to get right. JWS Marine services have refined the process and products used. John Shaw trained at the world famous classic boat builders McGruers and Co in Scotland. This means at JWS we combined traditional skills with modern products to achieve the result you want. The picture that you see is of a steel hull motor boat that was blasted and primed then the hull and superstructure was repainted to achieve a mirror shine.
